Decision Between Two

Both Andrea and I really like this song and the music video. We worked together and done a lot of research using the Internet to find a suitable song for us to create a music video to. The only problem we have with this video is the fact that we both want to be in it but there's only one female singer in this. We tried to think of ways we can make it work with the both of us in it but we're unsure about whether or not it'll look a bit strange having to girls singing one song.



We both then found this video which we're currently thinking of re-creating because it has two female singers. We don't necessarily like the actual video very much which is a good thing because it means that we can be more creative and make a far more interesting and fun music video. We came up with lots of good ideas that we would include if we were to choose this song for definite.

Decision On Group

The original plan was for Andrea and I to become a pair of two in a group as we are able to work well together and we are good at sharing and working around ideas.

However, we now have another student in our group as she wanted to take part in what we are doing and also planning on doing. Our group now includes me, Andrea and Nada.

Presentation
Andrea and I have decided to base our presentation on how women are presented in films. We have decided to focus on Black Swan as this allows us to talk about various different factors of how women are presented in many films. We are currently putting together a PowerPoint of our research and ideas.

I have done some of my own independent research to help me gain more understanding about this particular topic. I found some interesting information about the way women are presented on TV.

Adverts
Research shows that women usually appear in hygiene product adverts. 75% of all adverts using females were for products used in the bathroom or kitchen, 56% of women in adverts were shown as domestic housewives and only eighteen different occupations were shown for women, in comparison to forty three for men. A number of studies have come to the conclusion that a large number of advertisements portray women as housewives or sex objects. Adverts seem to be presenting the role of women as being very much a family and home orientated one.

Power
Often when women are shown in a position of power, it is portrayed as being unnatural, this is mainly because men are seen to be the more dominant charcters in society. For example having a male working for a female is made an issue of because it goes against the steriotypical image that has been created by many. This is one of the reasons why so many women are shown in domestic situations.

Male Gaze
Women in adverts and films are also represented as sexual objects used for the sole purpose of giving men pleasure. Women are expected to be sexy so they are made to look 'perfect' all the time which sets a high standard of how women should look.

First A2 lesson

Today we were given a breif outline of what our course will consist of to give us an idea of what we will be focusing on throughout the year.

To get us started everybody was given two different cards telling them what they will need to research and get examples of.

For example, mine are:

• Find an example of an interesting music video from the 1990s
• Find an example of a music video featuring a boy band

I chose Michael Jackson's Thriller video not only because i'm a big fan but also because there's a lot i like about it. One of the main things i like and enjoy about this video is the fact that it's a short film as well as a music video and it sets a scene before the music actually starts. I also like the fact that the title of the song reflects the video. Michael Jackson is famous for not only his great music but also for the way he dances as he has an original style of dance, this is another reason to why i chose this video because i find that the dancing plays a big part of the video as it's interesting and fun to watch. Another important feature of this music video is the different styles of costume.
The element that i would like to take from this for my own coursework would be the short film.

I like the fact that this music video is set in an unsual place. In my coursework i'd like to use an unsual place for the performance element of the video.
